Abraham Lincoln

Let’s Celebrate President’s Day!

February is a great month to be a TEACHER of young children!  First, it begins with a great legend about a GROUNDHOG.

Next, it has the least amount of teaching days than any other month, and includes a Monday holiday for a bonus! If that were not enough, Valentine’s Day and the 100th Day of School are February treasures too! Needless to say, it is also a busy month!

A Calendar to take home is a "Beary Good" way to begin the month!

Counting hearts and celebrating friends!

Zero the Hero flies in for the 100th Day of School!

George Washington makes a great February Bulletin Board!

In my TPT store, there are materials for Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, 100th Day of School, and George Washington.

But, ABE LINCOLN was a NO SHOW!

Recently, I found the time to create an Abraham Lincoln craft and little book for my kids. I am so excited to share it with you! This item is similar to my Washington Unit.

There are information pages, writing prompts, a craft, and a Little Book about Abe in color as well as B&W.

There is even an Abe Lincoln "Read the Room"!
I'm hoping that your February is extra special!

Warmly, Susie

Celebrate The 100th Day of School

The Big Day is finally here and it’s time to CELEBRATE!

Over the past 3 decades, my 100th Day of School celebration has morphed into a well organized and fabulous time for my kids!  I’m excited to share how to orchestrate this day with YOU!

My class has 30 students, so I ask six parents to help with the day.  Obviously, if you have less students, you will need less adult help.  If I don’t have enough parents then I ask 6th grade students to help with the day. The success and ease of this day depends on having TEAMS that stay together for the ENTIRE celebration.

I create 6 teams with 5 students. I have 6 activities for the day but you can have less or more to fit your schedule.

 1. 100TH DAY COLLECTIONS
2. 100TH DAY MUNCH
3. 100TH DAY FRUIT LOOP NECKLACE
4. 100TH DAY TALLY MARK RACE
5. 100TH DAY SELF PORTRAIT
6. 100TH DAY HATS

The children always stay at the same table with the same parent helper. Important note: The teacher does not have a team. I am always FREE to take pictures or help with any issues.

Each TEAM completes activity one, then waits until I give the signal to begin activity two.  By not having rotations, I can control the allotted time for each activity by observing the teams. If an activity is taking too long, I tell the parent helper to speed up the team, or if the activity is going too fast, I help the parent helper to slow down the team.

When all the students have finished an activity, we sing and dance, “The 100th Day of School” song, and then begin the next activity.

Points are given to the teams throughout the day for ANYTHING! I want them to feel like a TEAM and earning points is always a good motivator! I make tally marks on the board so everyone can see the points throughout the day.

I also lay colored butcher paper on each table according to the team’s color. If a child should complete a task early, she/he may draw a picture on the butcher paper.

There are lots of wonderful 100th Day of School books to choose from, but my all time favorite is: Mr. Wolf’s Pancakes, by Jan Fearnley.
